HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY EL SALVADOR!
Independence Day is always a day to celebrate cultural identity as well as the history of how independence was gained.
Many of the Central American countries share the same Independence Day. On 15 September 1821, the five countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua broke away from Spain and declared their independence. Originally, they were part of the vast Mexican Empire, but over the next twenty years each became their own independent country.
This past Friday, the children at La Casa participated in a civic presentation celebrating our cultural heritage and independence. The national anthem was proudly sung, and the pledge of allegiance recited. These were followed by typical dances, creative presentations of national symbols and a skit portraying the events leading to El Salvador declaring its independence. As well, an explanation of a traditional folktale whereby very long bones were discovered in ruins and assumed to be foreigners because these bones were so much larger than local people. After the wonderful presentations, everyone had the opportunity to sample many different typical dishes.
Thanks to all those who give generously so that the children receive educational experiences such as this. Please take a moment to enjoy all the details that were put into the afternoon by our children and their teachers. Happy Independence Day El Salvador!
