BE MY FRIEND

Valentine’s Day. Somewhere after a very long January, the calendar rolls over into a month decorated with hearts and everything pink, red and white. Right smack in the middle of the second month of the year, we celebrate love and friendships.

In El Salvador, the day is called “El Día de Amistad,” or “Friendship Day.” Some celebrate it with their friends by drawing names and playing a game called “Amigo Secreto,” or “Secret Friends.” They will plan a luncheon or dinner and exchange gifts.

This reminds us of special friends each of our homes have through our Sponsorship Program we use to call “Be My Friend.”  We have since renamed it to be called “The Front Porch.” Those who are the closest to us often come over and sit on our outside porches and talk about life, don’t they? Those who choose to be our special sponsors for each home are much like our friends who come over to have that cup of coffee or glass of lemonade with us and get an inside view of our homes.

Individuals (or even families or groups) choose one of our homes to sponsor on a monthly basis. Most commit to $40 a month; others choose to give more or less. This recurring donation helps us provide for the needs in each home. It truly take a village to care for children 24/7.

In exchange for the sponsorship commitment, once each quarter, sponsors receive a special email communication from the children and their houseparents in the home. This special communication most often includes a video of some sort where the children share some detail of their life, play a game together or make a typical dish. Our “Friends” get a special look into the lives of the children in the home they sponsor along with personal Prayer Requests so that they pray specifically for each child and their houseparents.

Doesn’t that sound like a special way to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year? If you are not already a part of our “The Front Porch” program, consider clicking on the link www.sponsorship.mfh-elsalvador.org  to learn more about it. We’d love to have you as one of our special friends! (request password to the site to communications@mfh-elsalvador.org )

Happy Valentine’s Day! We value each prayer, word of encouragement and support that is given to make caring for children in El Salvador who need a loving home in this season of their lives possible.
