LEARNING IS NOT BORING
Everyone gathered in small groups around the picnic tables under the pavilion area. Cotton balls, toothpicks, skewers, paper and an egg rested in the middle of each table. The children were tasked with creating a structure that would protect the egg as it would be dropped down the retaining wall leading to the soccer field. Sounds like a Science class, right? Well, maybe.
Last week, a team of high schoolers and staff from Valley Christian School partnered with us to enrich our education program. The students led the children in a variety of activities that challenged their thinking skills and creativity. There were experiments, hopscotch games requiring math skills, games of UNO, lines of children arranged by lengths of hair or birth date and circles of children solving “Who Did It.” If the children were asked what they did last week, they may respond with the word, “Play,” but indeed they were learning.
While the children were learning, our teachers had the opportunity to spend time learning as well. Staff members from Valley Christian School facilitated talks around differential teaching methods, Biblical Integration and wellness for all students. Together, they planned a field trip, creating and adapting materials to be used for all ages. It was a week of both learning and practice.
We are grateful for the way our Valley Christian partners came to serve and love and learn. From s’mores around a campfire to playing tag to engaging in learning together, we had so much fun together. Through discussions and activities, we gained a deeper understanding of our community and broader culture. It was a valuable learning experience for everyone. A heartfelt thank-you to Valley Christian for dedicating your Spring Break to serving, learning and sharing your energy with us!
