THE QUINCEAÑOS THAT ALMOST WASN’T. AN UNEXPECTED CELEBRATION OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.
In Latin American culture, a girl’s fifteenth birthday is a cherished milestone—a celebration of her journey from childhood into young womanhood. It is a day filled with chosen dresses, special memories, and the joy of being celebrated.
Each year at La Casa, we set aside a special day to honor the girls who have turned fifteen. Long before the celebration arrives, the excitement begins. The girls dream about the colors of their dresses, the shoes they will wear, and how they will style their hair. For a little while, they get to enjoy the simple excitement of being teenage girls looking forward to their special day.
This year, October 9 was marked on the calendar. But as the date approached, our resources were stretched thin. We began to wonder whether we would need to postpone—or even cancel for the time being—the celebration these girls had been anticipating for months.
Then something beautiful happened.
As word spread about the need, people began to give. Some donated money for dresses, shoes, and special jewelry. Staff volunteered to do nails and hair. Someone provided a beautiful cake for each girl. Others contributed decorations, while another person donated Bibles. Each of our homes helped prepare a special luncheon.
Little by little, everything came together.
Earlier that week, one of the girls approached our director with a simple but profound observation:
“I’ve been watching this year, and every time we’ve had a need, God has provided.”
And once again, He did.
On October 9, three beautiful young ladies were celebrated. Family members and staff came together to honor them. What had almost been postponed became a beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness, expressed through the generosity and kindness of others.
For girls who have experienced more heartbreak and loss than any child should have to bear, this celebration meant far more than pretty dresses and birthday cakes. It was an opportunity to remind them that they are seen, loved, valued, and worthy of being celebrated.
And perhaps most importantly, it was another reminder of a truth we pray they will carry throughout their lives:
God sees me. God knows me. I am a daughter of the King.
To everyone who helped make this day possible, thank you. Your generosity did more than provide a celebration. You helped create beautiful memories and reminded three young ladies that they are surrounded by people who care.
We hope you enjoy these glimpses of a very special day—the quinceaños that almost wasn’t!
